Goodness gracious,
2023 has been a whirlwind of gigs, training, plans, lessons, and workshops. We are feeling so fortunate and blessed! We kicked off the year with a Parisian themed event that Down to Earth Aerials trusted me with managing. It was quite the experience getting to run a full tech and put together a little show with people I’d just met that day. Luckily, everyone was super kind and professional making it a breeze. Also, I was excited to be able to craft a show with full transitional moments as opposed to the traditional more showcase style affair these events generally have. I’m really proud of everyone for learning their cues and being so cooperative.
As far as events are concerned, we also performed at a Lunar New Year themed event recently and also a scholarship gala for Black medical field professionals. We live for combining what we do along with our love for culture and belief in inclusivity but it’s rare that those things come together in a corporate gig type environment so these were both wonderfully welcome surprises.
On another note, teaching the fourth and fifth graders at the school has really picked up as well as more and more young ones continue to join us each week! Outside of our school endeavor, we have our regular studio offerings at Bloom! Jordan taught a beginner handbalancing workshop and we also have a duo straps workshop on the calendar coming up in March. It’s really nice to be teaching and performing heavily again– it reminds us of before the pandemic times and has felt really motivating to have some sense of “normalcy” return to us… even with a wild toddler running around these days. On the topic of teaching, we’ve also created a tutorial on the basic “two-high” in partner acro for CSAW circus’ Patreon page! Donations made through there go directly to their funding for grants to BIPOC circus artists so please consider checking that out!
Of course, it’s not always just us teaching others either. We’ve been fortunate enough to also recently have taken a private lesson with AcroJames, an amazing base that has worked on Crystal by Cirque du Soleil and he had some solid pointers and got us up in our first standing hand-to-hand together. We’re so excited for this journey of learning and being new at something.
In Nouveau Sud news- we held our auditions this month and it was so lovely seeing people that were interested in our mission and also in the realm of circus and movement. It is always so uplifting to be in community with other like-minded people and it gave me a lot of inspiration and ideas for soon-to-be implemented future programs, projects, and plans. As always, there’s a million things to be done and our calendar of events and shows looking forward in 2023 is robust. I won’t say more yet at this time but I am super excited to be a part of productions that say so much more than the ornamental nature that circus sometimes takes. The American Circus Alliance held an amazing virtual act pitch for the first time this year to connect artists with producers and I felt so fortunate to be able to build relationships through this event along with hearing from many artist about their impetus to create and their journeys with this artform.
The ironic thing about having so many projects is that when it’s time to collate everything together I somehow have even less content and media to share than if I had taken the time to share about each of them individually as it happened lol. C’est la vie. I hope you enjoy these little glimpses into some of the various happenings/events and of course, for more detailed info you can keep up with us on social media. @aerien.edge & @jordangarcia_1995
Until next update! ❤
