Besties, Bees, and Bestia

Hey everyone–

Here’s an update after some travels, gigs, and things!

First off- the Clt International Arts Festival had a preview party for the upcoming fest Sept/Oct and we were asked to give a preview of some of the show. Getting to choreograph group acro pieces lately has been such a fun challenge- the feeling of it all coming together and everyone knowing their parts, trusting one another to be where we’re supposed to be and do what we’re supposed to do to keep one another safe and to keep the performance going … its really such a lovely feeling. I’m incredibly proud of us for putting this one together in spite of various changes and challenges.

Then we hit up the DMV area for the national spelling bee with Down To Earth Aerials and as always it was an amazing experience. The kids were so dedicated but also knew how to let loose and have fun! Providing entertainment for them was really awesome and, of course, literacy is something we as parents and avid readers are passionate about. My inner nerd/child was living vicariously through these kids because, surprise surprise, I too was a spelling bee kid in elementary school lol.

Also, while in DMV, we were able to book some shoots- one of which involving us and one of our best friends Jarrell! Marc Pachon is a great photographer that I’ve worked with for many years now and he was happy to incorporate us all into a concept involving some wings, some demon horns, and a bit of getting raised out of perdition lol. The BTS video and subsequent images were real cool, although I will say trying to flare / invert with those heavy horns was the most challenging part lol.

In coaching related news, upcoming in a few days is my workshop with Bloom for their SPARK weekend. A weekend of workshops geared specifically towards performers and performance. Mine is called “Contact: A Theatrical Workshop for Movement Creatives” wherein I’ll be passing along some gems of knowledge and exercises for physical theatre I’ve been lucky enough to have experienced through learning under Nouveau Sud and those we’ve brought through the space- along with my own pedagogy for creation in this realm. I’m extremely excited, as always, to witness moments of freedom and creation and genuine expression amongst humans and community making.

Looking towards the future- we’ve been nonstop training (or as much as we can as parents) for La Bestia coming up in Chicago this July. I’ll attach a screenshot from my fabric act WIP. There’s so many moving pieces to touring a show this grand in size and also a LOT for us to create between solo acts, group ensemble/ground acts, and trio aerial acts on invented apparatus. It’s, as usual, a bit stressful and chaotic but always a blessing and learning experience. I’m sure I’ll have a lot more to say and post about it all after it’s done. I do know that I’m very stoked for us to be bringing various workshops, to be amongst other workshops within the Physical Festival, engaging with the LatinX community there, and performing at the beautiful Aloft Circus Arts.

We’re tired, sore, and a bit stressed LOL but feeling, as always, so thankful for this art, these messages, the communities built, and the conversations. Thanks for being a part of this journey with us.
