Wowowow it’s been a gosh darn whirlwind since we’ve been able to post!
Nouveau Sud’s residency in Chicago was such a beautiful experience. The city has such a tremendous arts scene and circus presence within the US it was really truly an honor to get to perform there and be in conversation with and community with those there. We met many incredible humans- from those in our residency/rehearsal area/housing area within Segundo Ruiz Belvis Cultural Center and the kiddos we were fortunate enough to teach circus to- to the amazing national and international cast members we brought on.
It was so freeing to the soul, also, to work in close proximity even though they were long and intense back to back days of creation, with BIPOC artists– specifically Latinx artists for La Bestia. It really further shows us the power, necessity, and joy in safe spaces and representation. We can wholeheartedly say we made some long term friendships there.
In addition to a park showcase for the Physical Theatre Festival, we were able to put on three nights of main stage performances at an unconventional venue for us– Aloft Circus Arts. Fitting such a large show as La Bestia (puppets, rigging, air track, huge invented apparatus, masks, etc…) into such a small area and putting up the show that way was in and of itself something to be proud of.
This show is extremely dear to our hearts as children of immigrants ourselves and seeing the kids that we taught in the audience when we performed added to the feelings of this being truly a purpose driven work. We are coming back to NC feeling tremendously blessed and motivated to continue our journey as humans and artists.
La Bestia is slated to continue touring in the 2024 season and we’re excited to see where that goes! In the meantime for the duration of 2023, we’re working on our Works in Progress showing of “Richochet”- a show on the national issue of gun violence / mass shootings. Wow. Along with other pop up events here and there, 2023 is rounding out to be quite the productive year and hopefully with creating, producing, and refining these two shows we will have a lot to keep us busy but certainly fulfilled.
To keep up to date with things keep up with us on social media! I’ll attach a few photos from the Chicago Bestia process but- of course- photos can never do justice the experience it truly was. ❤
